Sonnensystem

The solar system, or Sonnensystem in German, consists of the Sun and the celestial objects that orbit it. According to the European Space Agency (2021), there are eight recognized planets in the Sonnensystem, each with unique characteristics. The inner planets, including Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, are rocky and dense. In contrast, the outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, are gas giants with thick atmospheres.

A pivotal figure in understanding the Sonnensystem is Nicolaus Copernicus, who proposed the heliocentric model in the 16th century. This model placed the Sun at the center of the solar system, with the planets revolving around it in elliptical orbits (ESA, 2021). Copernicus's work revolutionized astronomy and laid the groundwork for future scientific advancements.

One of the most intriguing bodies in the Sonnensystem is Pluto. Although once classified as the ninth planet, Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union (NASA, 2021). This decision sparked debates among scientists and the public about the criteria for planetary classification.
