Public health plays a crucial role in addressing the challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness. Sleeping rough, or living on the streets, is a significant public health concern due to the numerous health risks associated with this lifestyle. According to the World Health Organization (2018), individuals living on the streets have higher rates of mental health disorders, substance abuse, infectious diseases, and chronic illnesses compared to the general population.

One of the key issues related to public health and sleeping rough is the lack of access to healthcare services. Homeless individuals often face barriers such as limited financial resources, lack of insurance, and social stigma, preventing them from seeking and receiving adequate medical care (National Healthcare for the Homeless Council, 2017). This results in untreated health conditions that can worsen over time and lead to higher healthcare costs for society as a whole.

In addition to healthcare access, the physical environment in which homeless individuals live also impacts their health. Exposure to extreme weather conditions, lack of sanitation facilities, and violence in homeless encampments contribute to increased risks of injuries, infections, and mental health issues (Gaetz et al., 2013).

Efforts to address the public health implications of sleeping rough require a comprehensive approach that combines healthcare services, housing support, and social assistance programs. By addressing the underlying social determinants of health and providing integrated care to individuals experiencing homelessness, public health interventions can improve the well-being of this vulnerable population and reduce the burden on healthcare systems.
